Safaafir Iraqi Maqam Ensemble

ABOUT: The Maqam is the classical vocal tradition of Iraq and it refers to the actual melodic recitations of Classical Arabic and colloquial Iraqi poetry. The maqam repertoire draws upon musical styles of the many populations in Iraq, such as the Bedouins, rural Arabs, Kurds, and Turkmen as well as neighboring Persians, Turks. Safaafir Iraqi Maqam Ensemble is the only Chalghi ensemble in the US that is actively performing the maqam, and has performed extensively for ALL audiences. Amir El Saffar - singer(gari), santour (96-string hammered Dulcimer); Dena El Saffar- jowza(bowed spke fiddle); Tim Moore- dumbek(goblet drum).
