Deirdre Schiffer

Deirdre Schiffer has been pursuing a deep interest in the power of being, the ineffable sense of presence we experience in our everyday lives.  Using the common subject matter of figure and interior and executed in various media, Deirdre’s work render moments that merge their subject and context in a poignant state of discovery and insight.  The interiors seem to invite one to be the subject, to enter the rich spaces she evokes, to experience the soft light that glows from within the image.

In 2006 Deirdre was selected by the Aldrich Museum to exhibit her work as one of ten noteworthy emerging artists from Connecticut and New York.  In its catalogue her figure studies and interiors were lauded for their “evocative portrayal of subjective emotional states” and have been described as being “permeated with expressions of solitude and contemplation”.  Her work has been selected for group shows by William Bailey and Andrew Forge.  In addition to exhibiting at the Aldrich Museum her work has been shown at The Silvermine Arts Center, The Maryland Federation of Art, and in New Haven at The John Slade Ely House and The Creative Arts Workshop.

Deirdre is a graduate of the Cooper Union School of Art and has pursued studies at Indiana University, Yale, and at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown.  She has been invited to be a fellow at the Vermont Studio Center and at The Women’s Studio Workshop.
